My current work in progress is about a woman who has received a suspended sentence from the courts. I will not divulge what she did, as that becomes clear later in the novel. As part of the conditions of her sentence, she is required to attend counselling in order to understand her crime, how she – a woman of previously good character – could behave in this way.
She finds this process so difficult that Mariella, her counsellor, suggests writing the story of how it all unfolded, on a weekly basis. Through this account, we find out how what appeared to be a harmless interaction with an old boyfriend unravelled and changed her life.
Alternating chapters also tell Mariella’s story as she wrestles with the problems raised by taking in her teenage brother.
I have written the start of this novel and hope to complete it within the next twelve months.
